Israel Independence Day is celebrated on the anniversary of the establishment of the State of Israel, according to the Hebrew calendar. The day preceding this celebration is devoted to the memory of those who gave their lives for the achievement of the country's independence and its continued existence. A total of 22,993 men and women have been killed defending the land of Israel since 1860.

 In mid-May, Israel will hold Agritech Israel 2012, the 18th International Agricultural Exhibition, which will showcase the latest and greatest agricultural technologies available in the world today.

 During the latest round of escalation more than 200 rockets were fired from the Gaza Strip targeting Israel. Of them, 117 fell in southern Israel. The Iron Dome aerial defense system intercepted and destroyed several dozen, preventing hits on populated areas.

 When the seven-person crew from the Israeli volunteer organization Eye from Zion arrived in a remote region in Ethiopia in February to provide free cataract surgery, they were expecting several dozen patients. Instead, hordes of adults and children were waiting to receive the life-changing operation. Over a thousand people were treated, and one young girl with a protruding eye was given a very special gift - a medical trip to Israel.

President Abbas must do what I have done. I stood before my people, and I told you it wasn't easy for me, and I said: "I will accept a Palestinian state." It is time for President Abbas to stand before his people and say: "I will accept a Jewish state." Those six words will change history. They will make clear to the Palestinians that this conflict must come to an end. That they are not building a state to continue the conflict with Israel, but to end it.

Born to a family of Bedouin shepherds in the Negev, Ishmael Khaldi was the only one of his 11 siblings to earn an advanced degree. Now the former shepherd is a seasoned Israeli diplomat.

The Embassy of Israel in Kenya decided not to hold its usual National Day reception and instead used the funds to renovate the Oncological Department of a children's hospital in Nairobi, Kenya.  The Israeli Deputy Ambassador there, Mr. Elbaz-Starinsky, added a personal touch with his artistic flair by hand painting a cheerful Mickey Mouse on the wall of the hospital.
