Yad Vashem

In November 2005, the United Nations General Assembly unanimously adopted a resolution introduced by Israel and designated January 27 as Holocaust Remembrance Day. This day will be marked by special events at the United Nations and throughout the world.

Israel President Shimon Peres, on a state visit to Germany (view photos), delivered a historic speech to the Bundestag in a special session devoted to Holocaust remembrance.
Prime Minister Netanyahu accompanied by Members of Knesset will mark the 65th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz camp in Poland. Foreign Minister Liberman will take part in the "March of the Living" remembrance ceremony of the Jewish community in Budapest.

PM Netanyahu: "The Holocaust was not only a crime against the Jews, it was a crime against humanity. Today there is new Jew hatred in our midst. There are new calls for the extermination of the Jewish state. The international community is being tested today whether it will stand up to the truth, to the evidence of evil, to the design of mass murder.

June 25, 2009 marks three years of Staff Sergeant Shalit's captivity. Hamas continues to refuse Red Cross access to the kidnapped soldier.

On June 25, 2006, Gilad Shalit was kidnapped by Hamas terrorists within Israeli territory, near the Kerem Shalom crossing.
